Halacha
The Halacha shiur focuses on Seder Orach Chaim and is designed to provide talmidim with a working knowledge of practical Halacha and an understanding of Halachic derivation from Gemara, Rishonim and Achronim.
In the 9th grade talmidim focus on the first chelek of Orach Chaim with the peirush of the Baer Hetev, Mishna Brurah and selected references to the Biur Halacha. Topics covered in the first chelek are Hilchos Tzitzis, Tefillin, Kriyas Shema and Tfilla. A great deal of emphasis is placed on skills - reading, researching and checking sources.
The 10th grade Halacha shiur focuses on the second chelek of Orach Chaim utilizing the Mishna Brurah and other classical meforshim. Topics covered in the 10th grade are Hilchos krias Sefer Torah, nitilas yadayim, seudah, birchas hamazon and shaar brochos.
The 11th grade Halacha shiur focuses on Hilchos shabbos v’yom tov utilizing the Orach Chaim with Mishna Brurah, Biur Halacha - with references to Aruch HaShulchan and contemporary shailos u’tshuvos found in Igros Moshe.
The 12th Halacha shiur will continue the study of Hilchos shabbos v’yom tov v’chol hamoed and will also introduce talmidim to various aspects of practical Halacha found in Yora Deah, Hilchos basar b’chalav and taaruvos - using the Tur and Shulcan Aruch with Shach and Taz.
In all grades, time will be devoted before each Yom Tov, Chanukah, Purim to learn Halachos practical and pertinent to the upcoming chag.
Upon graduation, our talmidim should be fluent and comfortable with the use of the Tur, Shulchan Aruch, Mishneh Brurah, Aruch HaShulchan and Igros Moshe when exploring Halachic issues which arise in the course of a Torah-centered life.
